Research Grants

The Willy Brandt Small Research Grants are short-term scholarships that are intended primarily to enable young scientists to complete an ongoing research project. Work that either deals directly with Willy Brandt’s work or legacy or with a chapter of contemporary history that is linked to him and his political work is eligible for funding.

The Foundation awards up to two Small Research Grants per year. The amount of the scholarship is determined on a case-by-case basis and amounts up to 5,000 €. The Board of Directors of the Foundation decides on the awarding of the Prize. There is no legal entitlement to a Willy Brandt Small Research Grant.

Scholars are free to propose their own special projects or ideas for funding. A Small Research Grant can, for example, fund a

  • visit to a archive in Germany or abroad or
  • a sabbatical to write a scientific essay or research paper.

Applications must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, a project outline (max. 2 pages) and a letter of recommendation from a tutor.

Applications (as a PDF to with the subject “Willy Brandt Small Research Grant”) should be sent to the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schöler, Wilhelmstr. 43, 10117 Berlin. The decision on the awarding of the grant is made by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The application procedure for the Small Research Grant 2022 runs until 31.8.2022.
